A Dip, a Plunge, and a Splash: How to Rescue Your AirPods

A Dip, a Plunge, and a Splash: How to Rescue Your AirPods

So that! This story begins from the dark, distant edge of your desk. Following a light cascade, your AirPods fall in water. And now you hear the familiar sound of a splashing club. The eardrums of your ears are pounding from the sudden aquatic adventure. Wrong steppe, right? Summer is always like this: fun by the water, the sun shines brighter, and... a moment of isolation when your gadgets discover a new world of wetness.

But you are not alone, my friend! If you're here, it means your AirPods have had their share of aquatic adventures. What to do in such a situation? Cross your fingers! We're here to bring your AirPods back to life.

So, here are some tips to help your AirPods after an unpleasant contact with water. Follow them step by step, and the most straightforward way will be the most effective.

AirPods in Water: What To Do?

AirPods in Water: What To Do?

Here we added main methods of how to rescue your AirPods from water.

Method 1: Dry cloth and turn over

You've soaked your AirPods in water. Luckily, Apple's own service recommendation can help. Dry them well with a small cloth and hang them upside down to dry.

Do the same with the charging box. If your AirPods look dry after a while, try using them. If they still don't work, don't stop trying. There are a few ways to revive soaked AirPods.

Method 2: Absorbent bags

If your AirPods appear still moist, get a container and several packets of sorbent. Those same bags often come with shoes, electronics, and other goods, that have “do not eat!” printed on them. The inside beads absorb moisture. Put several bags into the container with your damp AirPods and seal it shut for a few hours. This should pull any remaining moisture out of the AirPods and make them dry again so they work.

Once dry, try connecting your iPhone to your AirPods. Just listen first—even if they connect, the sound quality might be permanently messed up.

The old dry rice trick is worth trying; it works well for drying wet phones. But we don’t recommend using it on AirPods. Small grains of rice can get stuck in AirPods, which won’t help and could cause more harm than anything else. If this method doesn't work for you, move on to the next one.

Method 3: Replace AirPods

If your AirPods are soaked through and destroyed forever, don’t worry — there’s another option besides buying new ones from the store. Apple has a warranty program for AirPods (just like any product). If you have AppleCare+, it’s pretty cheap to replace them. Out-of-warranty costs are higher but still better than brand-new pricing either way! Look up your specific situation on Apple's official page about getting AirPod repairs done.

Are AirPods waterproof?

AirPods aren't fully waterproof or water-resistant—at least, none of the models currently advertised by Apple are. Knowing this will help us determine how much moisture is safe (or unsafe) around our earphones.

However, this isn't great news if you enjoy exercising with them because sweat can quickly enter those holes when working out. Some people seem to get away with it, while others find their sweat destroys AirPods permanently, so consider that risk before going for a jog or hitting up SoulCycle with these things!

It's also worth mentioning that all those exposed audio inputs and ports aren't water-friendly either, especially if you've already found your AirPods in water…

However, the newer Pro model does have some level of water resistance according to its IPX4 rating (which means splashes won't harm, but immersion definitely will). This is not waterproofing, though, so don't go swimming laps at your local pool wearing only these bad boys!

Don’t Allow Water in AirPods

To protect your AirPods from moisture and keep them safe, follow these tips:

  1. Do not use AirPods while swimming: Since they are not intended for use in water, it is best to refrain from using them while swimming or taking a shower. Even the waterproof AirPods Pro should be kept away from water because this could damage them.
  2. Avoid storing AirPods where there's water: When you’re not using them, put them in a place that offers protection against liquid. Don’t leave them by the poolside, on the bathtub's rim, or anywhere with a high moisture level.
  3. Be careful with sports: If you use your AirPods during physical activities like workouts or running, don’t expose them to sweat or any form of dampness. Find suitable accessories that can help secure your AirPods while preventing accidental drops.
  4. Assess usage conditions: Before using your AirPods in environments with a chance to let water in AirPods, take time to understand what precautions should be observed and, if need be, take extra protective measures like waterproofing cases.

Following these simple suggestions can avoid unpleasant situations and keep your AirPods in good shape. Remember that prevention is better than cure!

Now that you have gone through our suggestions and learned about water resistance, it’s time to put them into practice and attempt to bring back your drowned AirPods.
